ART;MALAYSIAN BATIK
Batik is one of the art and it is origin from Yogyakarta. Batik also famous in Malaysia especially in Kelantan,Terengganu and Pahang. All Malaysian batik is handmade from scratching,waxing by canting and colouring using dye. Batik design have many motifs and the most popular designs in Malaysian batik are leaves and flower theme. It is unusual if animals theme using in batik because Islam norms forbid animal images as decoration of motifs except the butterfly theme. More over,geometrical design such as spiral motifs also famous in batik design in Malaysia.
There have some procedure to make batik. First, melted wax is applied to cloth before being dipped is dye. It is a mixture of beeswax and paraffin wax. When the wax has seeped through the fabric, the dye will not penetrate. Sometimes several colours are used, with a series of dyeing,drying and waxing step. Then,pouring the liquid wax,painting the wax on with a brush. After that, applying the hot wax to pre-carved wooden or metal wire block and stamping the fabric. After the last dyeing, the fabric is hung up to dry, then it is dipped in a solvent to dissolve the wax or ironed between paper towels or newspapers to absorb the wax and reveal the deep rich colours and the fine crinkle lines that give batik its character.
Batik has many uses. Batik can be worn at dinner function for men. For ladies,it is can be wear as formal dress and also can combining batik with modern fashion. In Malaysia, government give encouragement to the civil servants to wear batik during the 1st and 15Th of the month.
