Costum of Chinese


WEDDING



In Chinese culture, wedding is apparently a combining or joining of two families when the bride and groom decide to get married and both of bride and groom families get involved. The fatherly God-in-the-moonlight ties a red string around the ankle of the man and woman who are supposed to be husband and wife someday. They will eventually get married althought they are far apart to each other.


Chinese traditional wedding ceremony have five step,which is:
1. Proposal and Betrothal
2. Pre-wedding Ritual
3. Wedding Day Ceremony
4. Wedding Night Ritual
5. Post-wedding Customs

Proposal and Betrothal
An auspicious date are taken by two families as the Betrothal Day and it is a formal meeting between the parents of bride and groom. In this meeting, the groom's family presents various proposal gifts (Grand Gift) that represents fertility and galore in Chinese Culture. After that, the two are considered officially engaged.

Pre-Wedding Ritual
When the betrothal meeting are done, both families will make announcement to their relatives and friends by sending out "Double Happiness Cakes" along with invitations. Then, the bride's family will prepares dowry and give a list of the dowries to the groom's family and also prepares household accessories that mostly bedding and dining necessities for the new home. The groom's family performs "setting bridal bed" ritual. and decorates the bridal house for the wedding.

Wedding Day Ceremony
During wedding day, bride's family and groom's family will performs "hair dressing" ritual and "capping" ritual for the bride and groom. Then the groom will go to the bride's house. When the groom reach her home, he will inevitably be blocked at her door by her friends. then, the bridesmaids will play door game with the groom and his attendants. The bride and groom will then leave for meeting the groom's family for Tea Ceremony. Wedding date ceremony ends with feast which features Chinese wedding food.

Wedding Night Ritual
At night, the bridal room will lit with dragon and phoenix candle to drive away the evil spirit. The newlyweds will drink wine from two cups tied together with a red string, arms crossed from each other. This is formal wedding in Chinese culture. After that, the bribe will be offered dumplings that's boiled half-raw. "Raw" is the same as giving birth to children, indication of family prosperity.

Post-wedding Customs
In the next morning, the bride must get up early and make breakfast for the groom's family to show that she is well-nurtured. After three days of wedding, the groom and the bride will go back home to visits the bride's parents.
